Preserving memories

5 Jan 2010 In: Uncategorized

We’ve all seen the ad.
Tux rental $100
Flower girl dress $75
new camera $1100
memories of her first wedding … priceless

We spend years creating memories and preserving them in photographs. In minutes they can all be lost. Your computer could crash, get erased by a giant magnet, ruined from a spilled drink, burned in a fire or be water damaged by a burst pipe or hot water heater. I know several people who have lost years of photos because they did not have them backed up. This year take the time to keep those precious memories safe. For About $100 you can get a small external hard drive, you plug it into your computer and copy your files off. (You should be backing up yoru entire computer by the way.) As a double fail-safe we also burn our photos onto DVDs and store them in a CD book at my husbands office. In case of a huge catastrophe we will still have our precious photos. Don’t put it off until it’s too late.

Happy New Year

1 Jan 2010 In: Uncategorized

Last year I resolved to learn to surf. Now I’m no master, but I rode a few good waves, had a lot of fun and can say I did it. I wasn’t sure I would be good or like it, so I decided to take an inexpensive weekend group lesson. They provided a teacher and board. When I arrived there was one other mom and the rest were young kids. I didn’t let that deter me. I followed the instructions and hung 10 as they say. The teenage instructor even complimented me- he said usually older people can’t pick it up so well. (Wait was that a compliment?) This year my resolution is to make Mombuzz your goto site for fun news and tips.
Write in and tell us your most or least successful new years resolutions!

LEGO Events

23 Feb 2009 In: current events, Fun, Toys

At one time or another most kids get into LEGO building phase. We are at the point now – it was a very LEGO Christmas at our house. It is a fun activity that the whole family can get involved in. I am always on the lookout for fun (inexpensive) activities and noticed that our local LEGO store has a variety of events – many of which are free. Click to find your local LEGO store or see the upcoming events. They have events where they display large models, where you can work with a “Master Builder” and help create a giant sculpture, special theme building classes and the first Tuesday of the month they have what they call a mini model make and take. This is a quick event where the children get the instructions and pieces to make a small model which they then get to take home. Hope you can make it next week to make the mini leprechaun.

We do not live near any of the major event sites, but if any of our readers attend we would love to see some photos.

Tip of the day: Double making the bed

18 Feb 2009 In: home, Tips

We’ve all heard that call in the middle of the night, “mom, I’m wet!” You roll over, sigh and get up to fumble around in the dark finding clean pajamas and sheets and then try to remake the bed quickly so everyone can get some sleep. To make this scene as easy as possible I double make the bed. Here’s how it goes: mattress cover, mattress pad, small pad, sheet, another small pad and another sheet. For a quick change you simply take the top 2 layers off and in about 10 seconds you have clean sheets and can put your child back to bed. It also works for small babies who tend to spit up and wet through their diapers. This is by far one of my favorite simple yet effective tips.

Save the Rainforest

17 Feb 2009 In: current events

I think most sane people can agree that saving our natural resources is a good idea.
For example, tropical rain forests:
provide up to 40% of the world’s oxygen;
are home to innumerable species of plants and animals;
plants provide 25% of our medicines and could provide many more that have yet to be discovered.

These important ecosystems are being destroyed at an incredible rate. Rainforests once covered 14% of the earth’s land surface; now they cover a mere 6% and experts estimate that the last remaining rainforests could be consumed in less than 40 years.
One and one-half acres are destroyed each second. This amounts to over 50,000 plant, animal and insect species going extinct each year!

Tropicana is sponsoring 100 square feet of rainforest for each code entered from their products. It may not seem like much, but every bit adds up. Go to www.tropicanarainforest.com to sign up and enter your codes. If you are too lazy to log in, e-mail your codes to us and well do it for you!

Winter warm up

12 Feb 2009 In: Uncategorized

We all know it’s more difficult to get out of bed on a cold winter’s day. To make it easier have everyone choose their clothes the night before, then first thing in the morning heat the clothes up in the dryer for 5 minutes. Makes getting dressed fun.
